Administration of Medication Policy

Self-Administration

With Parent’s signed permission, children who are older than 4 can also wear their epinephrine on their body and can self-administer where possible.

  • Children who are self-administering must do so in front of a staff member who can provide support as required
  • if a child is unable to self-administer, the staff will step in and provide appropriate support
  • If an EPI-Pen is administered (whether self-administered or given by the staff) 911 must be called. The EPI-Pen must be kept in a same place and must accompany the child to the hospital.
  • Staff must record when medication is given to the child whether the child or the staff administers the medication. A record of the date, time and along with any other details must be recorded on this form. This must also be noted in the daily log.

Drug Identification Numbers

All products containing Drug Identification Numbers (8 digit number) require a schedule of administration and record keeping as required. This applies to many items including vitamins, medicated ointments, prescription medication and over-the-counter medication. All drugs or medications are stored according to the storage instructions on the label.

Kids Come First will provide parents with a “blanket” authorization form for the daily usage of over-the- counter items such as sunscreen, diaper creams, lip balms, insect repellants, moisturizing skin lotion and hand sanitizers. The item must be in the original container, must be labelled with the child’s name and must be stored and administered in accordance with the product label and the parent’s authorization. The item may not be an item that is defined as a drug or medication, as defined in the Drug and Pharmacies Regulation Act , whether or not the item has a DIN number.

Storage

All medication, including any medication of the employees, will be stored out of the reach of children. A space will be designated that is out of the reach of the children and lockable.

Authorized Medication Personnel

  • Authorized Medication Personnel will be posted on the main information board
  • Each location will establish one person who will be in charge of dispensing the medication in their program. (i.e. Supervisor)
  • Programs that have both a preschool and school age component can appoint one person from each program.
  • In the event that the person is unable to administer the medication or is away, a designate will be appointed.
