Workplace Accommodation

Provided that an employee with a disability is able to perform the essential duties of his or her own job or other available and suitable work, the Centre will make best efforts to accommodate that employee’s limitations.

Employees who raise a potential need for accommodation shall do so by submitting a request, in writing, for accommodation to their immediate Supervisor/Executive Director. The request shall:

  • describe the limitations or medical restrictions causing the accommodation request; and
  • describe, in detail, the accommodation sought to address the need.

To facilitate the assessment and determination of any accommodation requested, the employee will be required to provide relevant medical information to the Centre, which sets out any functional limitations and the employee’s functional abilities. The medical information shall also include the doctor’s prognosis of when the employee will be able to return to the full duties of his or her position, if applicable. Employees seeking accommodation are expected to fully cooperate in providing any information, including medical information, relevant to the determination of the accommodation request.

The Executive Director/Designate will assess the accommodation issue in light of the information provided. During the assessment phase, the Centre reserves the right to require further information, including relevant medical information or opinions. The Centre further reserves the right to require the employee to participate in a formal needs-assessment by a qualified medical practitioner or other trained professional in order to assist in determining what accommodation is required and how it can be provided, if possible.
