Criteria for Safety Inspectors
Kids Come First must confirm that the following criteria is met by a Certified Playground Safety Inspector:
- The Inspector holds current certification by the Canadian Playground Safety Institute as a Certified Playground Safety Inspector;
- Have proof of current Professional Errors and Omissions insurance coverage. Only Errors and Omissions insurance provides coverage related to interpretations of the Standard, the judgment of non-complaint equipment, the documentation of the observations and recommendations, any non-negligent errors or omissions that may inadvertently occur;
- Be a third party inspector and declare non-conflict of interest including declaration of non-affiliation with playground equipment and safety surface manufacturers, suppliers and/or other contractors involved in the retrofit, upgrade or repair of playground equipment and protective surfaces; and
- When a Certified Playground Safety Inspector is chosen to inspect the Centre, it is at the discretion of the Centre to request references.
It is understood that MED and/or the Program Advisor may request verification of the above criteria.
Supervision and Programming Expectations
As part of this Policy, Kids Come First shall indicate the Child Care Staff roles and responsibilities regarding safety while outdoors. The staff shall:
- It is Kids Come First’s policy that while the children are outside, there will be no less then two staff on duty. This will ensure that in the event of an emergency one E.C.E. teacher will stay with the children;
- Ensure that ratios are maintained at all times during outdoor programming.
- Ensure that outdoor safety and playground safety is maintained at all times;
- Ensure that the perimeter of the outdoor space is supervised by all staff;
- Ensure that the perimeter fencing surrounding the playground is supervised by all staff;
- Ensure that all children and all areas of the playground being used are closely supervised;
- Ensure the proper positioning of all staff in the playground which will enable them to observe the children at all times;
- Post a monthly Outdoor Program Plan and ensure that the program is visible to parents and staff; and
- Ensure that at least once per month (or sooner if needed), the staff will discuss during the program meeting any issues or concerns related to safety on the playground.
All permanent and temporary staff of Kids Come First shall review this policy and sign it prior to employment. This policy shall be reviewed annually and signed by the staff and the Director. It will be kept on file for at least two years.
This Playground Safety Policy may be reviewed by MED at the time of the annual Licence Renewal visit.
